Switzerland and Finland put on a nerve-racking display in their battle for a place in the final. The Finns started the game off stronger, with two excellent chances in the 10th minute. Swiss keeper Daniel Streit kept his team in the game with a reflex save. Not long after, Markus Gerber fed a cross pass to Philip Fankhauser, whose shot put Switzerland 1:0 in the lead. The Finnish equaliser came within three minutes, as Mikko Kohonen arrived at the Swiss goal totally unmarked.

Switzerland returned from the break with greater determination. In the 25th minute, Emanuel Antener put the Swiss in front once more. Only 5 minutes later, Christoph Hofbauer launched a run by forward Philipp Fankhauser, who set up Matthias Hofbauer in the centre to extend the lead.

The final period began with a revived Finnish performance. Mikael Järvi converted Forsten’s pass just 28 seconds in. This made the Scandinavian play even faster and with renewed skill. Switzerland were able to hold on their lead for a while, thanks to a little luck and incredible efforts by their goalie. However, seven minutes from the end, Mika Moilanen’s solo run led to an equaliser. Despite dominating play, Finland could not find a winning goal until the regular time had elapsed, so the game went to overtime.

The additional time saw Switzerland restored. They created many chances on goal, but could not convert them. This would prove costly in the 63rd minute of play, as Juha Kivilehto put the ball in the Swiss net.

This 4:3 victory for Finland gives them a place in tomorrow’s 15:30 final against the winner of the other semi final between Germany and Sweden. Switzerland will play the loser in the bronze medal game at 12:30.
